If your design is built exactly to the final size (the “trim size”) without any margin for error, even a 0.5mm shift in the blade can result in a thin, distracting white sliver at the edge of your postcard or brochure. This is why we rely on the industry-standard “safety net” known as the bleed.
1. The Bleed: Extending Your Vision
The bleed refers to the area of your design that extends past the final trim edge of the document. If your design includes a background color, a pattern, or a photograph that is intended to reach the very edge of the page, it must “bleed” off the edge.
- The Industry Standard: For most commercial projects, your bleed should extend 0.125″ (3mm) beyond the trim line on all sides.
- The Purpose: This extra eighth of an inch ensures that when the blade trims the paper, it cuts through your color or image rather than the white of the paper.
